Learn Orthodontic Assessment

Having a consistent and clear orthodontic workflow will help you to deliver better and faster orthodontic treatment outcomes. We take a systematic approach to everything... our teaching, our resources, the way we work and of course, orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic treatment can be complicated. We want to streamline the whole process.

Your assessment should give you a comprehensive undersanding of the orthodontic case presenting in front of you, and lead you organically to formulate appropriate orthodontic treatment plans. It can also help you to identify some limitations of treatment, or areas of concern which you should discuss with the patient or include within your consent process.

Orthodontic assessment is made up of examining and measuring extra-oral and intra-oral parameters in three planes (anteroposterior, vertical and transverse). You should also assess three different type of tissue (skeletal, dental and soft tissue). Measuring the relationship of these three tissue types in the three planes forms the basis of an excellent orthodontic assessment.

Depending on your level of experience with orthodontic treatment, going through a systematic assessment will help you with case selection; in other words, the assessment process should identify cases which you can treat confidently, and those which you may wish to refer to someone more experienced or a specialist. Picking the right cases and treating them to a high standard is fundamental to building confidence in your orthodontic skill set, and furthermore will reduce your stress and protect you from litigation.
